For week 6 of EDCL 336, I attended the IDÉLLO presentation, LIVE-IT Bilingual place-based learning, and Privacy Essentials.
I enjoyed all three of the presentations because I was able to project and imagine myself using these websites and information sources for once I am teaching full-time.
As a student teacher candidate, I feel like these sorts of resources are what will fill in the spaces for when I wonder “Where can I find some learning activities for the class?”.
However, I was aware that these websites existed, but I find it useful that we got a walkthrough where a regular user of the site can demonstrate the components of the site and answer some questions from the presentation attendees. In our class last semester we’ve listened to some shorter demonstrations. I think i’ll have a better grasp of everything these websites have once I actually am putting them to use in a classroom setting.
One part I thought super useful for learning a second language, is actually being able to have the subtitles in the same language to understand pronunciation and which words are being used. I find this more effective than just having english subtitles because its easier to resort to reading in english.
Whenever I watch films in french I put on the french subtitles because I want to hear what was actually said rather than a translation.
Here’s a video from IDELLO that shows how to access this option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kfGCakTZyM
I think its important because sometimes videos don’t have subtitles at all, so its good to know that its an accessible option for learners. Sometimes the audio is a little fuzzy, so subtitles clarify in that sense as well.
Even when I listen to Podcasts on my tablet, I usually put the Live Captions (english audio, english captions) because I like to hear clearly what is said.
