Looking back on this project, I learned a lot from the process of sewing my first set of curtains. While they didn’t turn out perfectly, the experience taught me several lessons that I would definitely apply to future sewing projects.

The first lesson is that it might not be the best idea to make your first sewing project something you will have to look at every day. Curtains are large, visible, and hard to ignore if something isn’t quite right. While I’m proud of finishing them, I’m also very aware of the small mistakes I made. Starting with something smaller or less visible might take some of that pressure off when learning.
Another important lesson is to always double-check behind the needle to make sure the machine is actually sewing. Multiple times during this project, my bobbin ran out of thread, or the top thread slipped out of the needle. Because I was so focused on keeping my seams straight, I didn’t notice right away and ended up sewing for several inches, sometimes even a few feet, without actually making any stitches.
I also discovered that light fabric can be much harder to sew than fabric with more structure. The curtain fabric moved around more than I expected, which made it tricky to keep the seams straight and even. When I was sewing the bands at the top, the thicker fabric was much easier to control, and I could immediately feel the difference.
Even though this project had its challenges, it was a really valuable learning experience. I now feel much more comfortable using my sewing machine and understanding how different fabrics behave. If anything, the small mistakes made the learning process even more meaningful.
