Integrating Fitness into the Classroom:
I wanted to take the time to create an introductory lesson on integrating fitness into the classroom. This connects to the PHE curriculum for grade 2 and allows students to explore healthy fitness without limitations or requirements. They are exploring movement, and this activity can be done in the classroom, so it does not require a gym or outdoor space.
I first asked an AI (ChatGPT) for a lesson plan to introduce fitness in the classroom. The exact prompt was: create me a lesson plan on how to introduce fitness to the classroom. Not yet but i will ask you to create another one later that would be mid-unit of integrating fitness in the classroom. Detailed output here. This lesson is designed for grade 2-3 students and lasts 30-40 minutes. It connected it with big ideas and learning objectives. It created a full first lesson with components such as a hook/intro, body movement, mini-lesson, classroom fitness circuit, and a cool-down/reflection. The lesson plan also includes assessment and extensions. I liked this lesson and would only make a few changes based on the students’ group or the classroom layout. I do think that this activity would be a great introduction to fitness and healthy living in the classroom for younger students.
After ChatGPT created this initial lesson plan, I wanted to explore another AI platform to see whether it could enhance it. I chose to use MagicSchoolAI because it is designed for teachers and will be better at creating lesson plans for the actual classroom. I used the exact lesson plan ChatGPT gave me and asked it to refine it for the classroom. The results can be seen here. Though the overall structure of the lesson remained the same, there were a few changes to improve it for the classroom. MagicSchoolAI revised the learning objectives for clarity, simplified the movement portion for students this age, clarified the mini teaching points, and added a guided cool-down. Overall, I like the changes MagicSchool made and would have made them myself when diving into actually teaching this lesson.
I think that AI is a very vaulable tool to use when beginning lesson plans. It is important to evaluate the lesson thoughoughly for what is going to work best for the class and the needs of the students. Taking into account the IEP conciderations and what space you have for the lesson. It creates a good structure for a lesson and helps generate ideas, especially for when a teacher is stuck or just begging the topic. I hope to get to try this lesson in my practicum classroom and see how a lesson generated by AI works with students and what changes need to be done in order for the lesson to be effective and hit all learning goals.
If you have the time, I encourage you as the reader to explore the differences between the two lesson plans by using the hyperlinks and discover what you might do in your own classroom!
The next post will share a lesson plan that is further into a fitness/health unit that integrated activities at home and gets students excited about getting active!
