Hello EDCI 335 students!
My name is Joanne Kehoe, and I will be your instructor for the Summer 2026 section of EDCI 335: Learning Design for Technology-Mediated Environments, alongside our teaching assistant Houaida Bouslimi. We’re looking forward to connecting and learning with each of you this term.
This is primarily an online asynchronous course – in other words, self-paced with some scheduled synchronous meeting times in the form of student hours. The EDCI 335 website will be the main hub for our course content, whereas the D2L course shell will be the spot for announcements and to submit assignments. We will post Weekly Updates at the same time each week both here as well as on our course shell – will aim for Monday morning and will include a ‘check-list’ of activities in order for you to keep on top of things. Please make sure to check this space and the class website frequently. As the course is compressed, there are quite a few things to do in a short amount of time!
The Brightspace course shell will be used for weekly announcements and submitting and grading assignments to keep that aspect organized, private and secure. The course outline can be found both on our course website as well as here for your review. Make sure you review the course outline carefully, note our learning outcomes and familiarize yourself with how you will be assessed.
WEEK 1 CHECKLIST
Please complete the following tasks before next Monday, May 18th:
The first half of this week you should focus on course orientation, which ask you to:
- Read this announcement (you’ve already made a good start!) – note it is almost identical to the one in the Weekly Updates section of our course website, where the remainder of weekly activities and to do’s will be be posted
- Read the course outline.
- Take a tour of our EDCI 335 course website and familiarize yourself with the top menu items and where to find our materials. Note that the content within the Education Competencies menu will evolve as the course progresses.
- Read the privacy, FIPPA, and consent tutorial.
- Review the opened.ca Code of Conduct, then,
- Sign up for a WordPress blog no later than Friday, May 15th. Blogs will be used for most of our assignments.
- Complete the Learner Preferences Survey. NOTE that this survey asks you for a link to your blog, so ensure you’ve completed the previous step before starting the survey.
- Customize your blog > Post a (can be short!) self-introduction to your blog – by next Monday, May 18th. There are no specific requirements regarding this introduction – you can simply use text, or add in images, video, audio – and it can be as short or as long as you like!
This week we are also looking at the first course topic of Learning and Motivation. Activities to complete ask you to:
- Read the post ‘Why is Learning Hard?’ and consider how learning design might be affected by a learner’s past experiences or motivation.
- Read the post ‘Motivation and Learning’
- Reflect on what you have read by completing a blog post reflection in response to one of the prompt options for Blog Post #1
- Form your learning pods and sign up for a group in the following Learning Pod Sign Up Form.
- Optional for keeners: use Teams to chat/meet with your learning pod to introduce yourselves and begin thinking about a topic for your Learning Design Blueprint and Interactive Resource
