Rich McCue

My name is Rich McCue and I am your instructor for EDCI 336: Technology and Innovation in Education. I look forward to meeting you and working with you all throughout the semester.

I emailed you the course outline, and during our first class, we will briefly go through the syllabus, address any questions, and get set up for the term ahead. Please review the syllabus before class and bring any questions you may have.

I have three things I would appreciate you doing before we meet:

  1. We will be using an instant messaging system to stay connected throughout the term both in class and beyond. It is called Mattermost (similar to the Slack messaging application) and will allow us to connect collectively, in small groups, or one-to-one via text. This service is hosted in BC and is specifically available for educational institutions. Signup for a Mattermost account using the link in the course outline that was emailed to you. Please use your first name & last name when you create your Mattermost user name.
  2. Download & install the Mattermost mobile & desktop apps on your phone & laptop.
  3. To help me get to know you a bit better, please email me (rmccue@uvic.ca), or send a short video if you prefer, letting me know a bit about you (here is a short video so you can learn a bit about me: https://youtu.be/_c0jzomlAnw) :
    • Where you grew up
    • Your undergraduate degree
    • What grade levels you would like to teach (if you know at this point)
    • What you hope to get out of EDCI 336
    • Anything else you’d like me to know about you

For the first two weeks of class, we will be meeting in the class Zoom Room (the link is in the course outline) on Friday at 10:00am. After that, we will be meeting in MacLaurin D282 on Friday each week at 10:00am.

I want you to know that you can always contact me if you have questions or concerns, I will reply as quickly as possible. Mattermost will be the quickest way to get a response. In addition, if needed throughout the term, you can contact me via my cell number (see the course outline). Please text or message me on Mattermost before calling. Sometimes it is helpful to talk through an issue for quicker resolution.

Here is some additional contact information for me:

I hope that the start of term has gone well so far and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Take Care, Rich
