Hello!

I am Ryan Banow and I am the instructor for the Summer 2022 A02 section. This is my second time teaching EDCI 339 at UVic. I am excited for the opportunity!

Ryan Banow

I grew up in Treaty Four Territory and the Homeland of the Métis in rural Saskatchewan and attended the University of Saskatchewan to complete a B.Ed. and a B.Sc. in Mathematics. A few years later, I received an M.Ed. in Educational Technology and Design also from the University of Saskatchewan.

In 2012, I began working full-time at the University of Saskatchewan at the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching and Learning. My title is Educational Development Specialist and a major part of my role is supporting faculty and instructors in using technology to enhance their courses and teaching. Check out my LinkedIn profile for a more detailed explanation of my Educational Development Specialist role.

Since 2014, I have also had the privilege of teaching courses in the College of Education at USask. In 2021, I was honoured to be nominated by my students and to win a University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award!

Before my time working at USask, I taught in K-12 schools for five years. My main teaching areas were high school Mathematics and Physics.

Currently, my main educational interests are blended learning, active learning, experiential learning, integrating technology (including VR) into teaching and learning, and math and science education.

Related to the topics of the course, I have taught a number of online (or distributed) courses, including a MOOC on learning technologies. If you’re not sure what MOOC means, you’ll know by the end of the course!

I live in Treaty Six Territory and the Homeland of the Métis in the city now known as Saskatoon with my wife, two daughters, and our two dogs.

You can find me on Twitter at twitter.com/rbanow, although, I haven’t been active as of late.

I’m looking forward to getting to know you and supporting you in your learning journey!

Last but not least, each time I teach a course, I gather feedback from the students during the term and at the end of the term. Please know that I value any feedback you provide and it will be carefully considered and applied when designing and teaching this and future courses.
