I’m so excited to teach EDCI 136: Digital Literacy for learners at UVic and to welcome also open learners who wish to wrap around this course, whether they are K12 students or teachers, post-secondary instructors, leadership in various roles, or the public citizen whether near or far. For open learners, I have a welcome video just for you (14 min) that orients you to this course should you wish to wrap this course for your own personal learning.

Tasks for this week for EDCI 136:

  • Attend your lab for orientation
    • The course outline will be reviewed in the lab and you may review a video I recorded that goes over the outline and course website in case you missed it. It’s posted on the BrightSpace in one of our announcements. This reviews the course outline, privacy and consent, explains the assignments, orients you to the website, schedule, teaching philosophy and more. It is not public due to the private links it contains.
  • Enroll in a Lab!
    • Labs in EDCI 136 are not like science labs where it is like a whole additional course. This is just an organizational approach so you know who is going to support you for your assessments this term. This course is weighted the same as any regular 1.5 unit course. For three hours of instruction, there are two hours of lecture and one hour of lab. Join a lab in the order there is available space. More may be added.
  • Review this course blog
    • Please skip reviewing the posts found under the competency menus given they will be updated as I link to them from my Instructor posts each week
  • Read this blog post on WordPress Portfolios and consent/privacy
  • Make your blog! Follow steps at Creating a blog on the OpenETC (needed for us to set up your blog)
  • Join Mattermost
  • Complete the Learner Pod Sign-up AFTER January 21 (the last day to add courses)
    • Info and links found on BrightSpace and here on the Social Spaces page.
    • Once we have pods formed, we will introduce you to each other via Mattermost direct messaging (DM). You can then figure out a good day/time for the four of you to meet weekly in your own Zoom room.
  • Know where to find our Zoom link for live/lab sessions
    • Hint: pinned post on BrightSpace, on our course outline, on our blog social spaces menu
  • Know where to find our Calendly links to sign up to meet me or one of your lab instructor
  • Review an archive of the Guest Session (42 min) with Brian Lamb of TRU and the Open ETC (see bio and his blog
