In Module 4, we discussed the multiple meanings and approach to open education. Part of open pedagogy is significant changes to how (and why!) students are assessed. In fact, this is also one of the biggest challenges of implementing truly open education because institutions raise concerns about assessment integrity and measuring student outcomes. However, Open Pedagogy offer many meaningful, authentic and student-centred ways of transforming assessment.
eCampus Ontario is hosting a series of free webinars, including one focused on Open-Resource Assessment. This session is being hosted online on Thursday, November 10th at 9:00 AM Pacific Time. Click here to register for the session. Registration is free.
Open-resource assessments support a learner-centered environment that reduces test taking anxiety and increases student satisfaction. This presentation will highlight the utility of open-book and open-web assessments as innovative learning tools in synchronous, hybrid and asynchronous course modalities as they allow students to personalize their learning experience in tandem with instructor-led activities. Results from student cohort performance in focal and co-requisite courses will be presented, as well as flexible strategies for mitigating grade inflation. These methodologies can be applied to nursing and non-nursing disciplines with equal success.
For this activity, you will attend the session, participate in the conversation (if you would like), and reflect on Open Education and Assessment. In your Learning Portfolio entry, please include the following:
1.) Provide a summary of the information shared in the session.
2.) Reflect on the idea of Open-Resource Assessment. What is it? How does it work? How is it beneficial for students? What challenges does it pose? Could it work in all educational environments and/or for all disciplines?
3.) What other ways could assessment be made to be more open? (For this question, you can speculate or do some research!)
Post your summary and reflection in your Learning Portfolio. Make sure to also include a short self-reflection on why you chose this activity, how it aligned with your learning goals, and what you learned through your critical review of the experience.
NOTE: TESS is also offering two other sessions that may be of interest. Click here for more information on the other Webinars being offered this week.
