Introduction to Topic 3:
This topic explores more deeply some practical guidelines for designing effective multimedia learning material that we have mentioned in passing in Topics 1 & 2. To start I’d like you to listen to an audio introduction by my wonderful colleague, Kevin Alexander, to introduce the Principles of Multimedia Learning. I will then provide you with some readings and a video to give you a high-level view of each of the principles as well as some background on their origins.
Please try to apply some of the Multimedia Learning Principles we covered in our Sketchnoting lab by making sketchnotes of the key points in the following audio recording, video and readings (and beyond if you find it helpful). Consider including a picture of your sketchnote in your blog post #2 as a multimedia element.
An Overview of Multimedia Design for Learning
Multimedia Learning Principles
Please watch the excellent video below which answers the following questions:
- What is Multimedia Learning?
- What is Multimedia?
- What are the Multimedia Principles?
The video also provides several examples of how educators use multimedia well and not so well while reviewing several Multimedia Learning Principles (17 min). Note the following while you watch the video:
- Try to sketchnote as you watch this video. Pausing the video can be helpful while sketchnoting so that you don’t miss any key points as you make notes and sketches.
- Which multimedia principles did Dr. Ray Pastore not follow in his video about MML principles? You can include this in your sketchnote.
- If you’d prefer to read about this topic rather than watch the above video, please read this overview document from UBC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning, & Technology.
Multimedia Learning Principles & Handbook of MML
Principles of Multimedia Learning – A summary document for reference purposes. Useful reference when for the Multimedia App Evaluation group assignment. Note: The chapters referenced for each principle are from the The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning.
Blogging Assignments:
- Blog Post 2 due using categories edci337–blog category. Blogging prompts:
- Which multimedia learning (MML) principles did Dr. Ray Pastore now follow in his video about MML principles? Why might an expert not be able to follow all the principles when creating a multimedia learning object?
- Can you think of some pedagogies that the HP5 tool might be helpful in supporting?
- Which learning principles would a thoughtfully created H5P interactive video take advantage of or demonstrate?
- Could you see yourself using H5P in your practice? If so, how might you be able to use it appropriately for the learners at the grade level you’re teaching to support a pedagogy you are using?
- Other thoughts or reflections on interactive and multimedia learning from any of these topics videos, readings, and H5P lab?
- Please embed 2 or more multimedia learning objects in your post.
Group Assignments
- Start working on Group Evaluation of a Multimedia App Assignment. Please refer to the assignment page for details. If you’d like your group can use the spreadsheet in your MS Teams learning pod channel to help you organize.
- For the Remix assignment, note that it is based on one chapter from The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning. Please refer to the assignment page for details. If you’d like your group can make a second copy of the spreadsheet in your MS Teams learning pod channel to help you organize.
Lab:
- Thursday, June 11, 10:00am – 11:00am
- H5P Lab video & : Create interactive content like Interactive Videos, Presentations, Games, & Quizzes.
