Hello and welcome! My name is Joshua Hotchin. I am a teacher in the Victoria School District (#61), a sessional instructor at the University of Victoria (UVic), and a graduate student in the Master of Education (M.Ed.) program specializing in Educational Technology at UVic. I also hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and a Professional Specialization Certificate in Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) from UVic.

As your lab instructor for EDCI 136, I aim to create a learning environment that encourages every student to explore their potential, make mistakes, and grow. My educational philosophy focuses on creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning space where students feel able to take risks, discover their interests, and develop as capable and self-determined individuals.

When I was in Grade 5, I had a remarkable teacher who was caring, understanding, and supportive. That experience inspired me to become a teacher who helps students feel understood and respected while achieving their best. Having struggled with various subjects during my own schooling, I understand the challenges students face and am passionate about helping them overcome those obstacles to succeed.

Over the past few years, I’ve taught at three middle schools—Rockheights, Monterey, and Gordon Head—working with students in Grades 6 to 8. In the future, I plan to pursue a PhD in Educational Studies, move into administration, and continue supporting learners at the post-secondary level.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my 5-year-old niece, hiking, swimming, and staying active. While a shoulder injury over the past three years has made it difficult to lift weights as I once enjoyed, I’ve been focusing on hiking, walking, and trying to stay consistent with my physio exercises. I’m also a former soccer player who played for almost two decades before transitioning to coaching due to injuries. I share my home with Parker, my energetic and lovable Golden Retriever, who always keeps life exciting.

I want to ensure that everyone has a successful, positive, and educational learning experience through the work we do together this term. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to working with you and supporting your learning journey this term!
