We have talked about digital consent and privacy and it is the choice of every guest and every learner to choose their privacy preferences. For each guest, we ask:

1) Public or Private Talk: Do guests want their talk posted publicly (on the blog) or privately (in BrightSpace, our learning management system)?

2) Public or Private Reflections: Do guests want students to reflect on their talk publicly or not with their identity (if students have public blogs)?

– If publicly, then your blog reflection posts may appear in a search of the guest’s name on the internet, thus becoming part of their digital footprint.

– if privacy is requested, then please only refer to the topic of their talk and what you’ve learned but refrain from naming the guest (or outing them by their role, etc.) or screenshotting or posting any portions of their private video. While a student with a private blog may think it’s ok to mention the person who wants privacy, we know that privacy settings may change with changing preferences/outlooks, so they should follow the above instructions to avoid naming regardless of whether your blog is public or private.

3) Copyright & License: Do guests want their video copyrighted with an open license or not. If yes, then which one? All private talks are defaulted to copyright with no open license to ensure no further sharing of their materials beyond BrightSpace. All public talks are defaulted to Creative Commons License with CC BY unless otherwise indicated, so please watch for licensing variations.

It’s important that you consider the above as you, yourself, create media that involves other people’s identities. It’s generally considered good practice.
