About Dr. Valerie Irvine
Welcome to my EDCI 568 instructor blog! Under the EDCI 568 menu, you will find my instructor posts and also any learner posts with the category “edci568.” I look forward to working with all of you in the MEd cohort. As I will be your cohort coordinator, we will be having a long journey together over two years. I am a professor in educational technology at the University of Victoria in the Faculty of Education‘s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, where I am also the undergraduate and graduate educational technology area advisor. I am also co-director of the Technology Integration and Evaluation (TIE) Research Lab, which was funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the University of Victoria, TELUS, and many other sources and sponsors.
To give you more about my academic background, I have a BA (English) and a BEd from UBC. I began a Master’s in Educational Psychology (specialization in Educational Technology) at the University of Alberta, and was fast-tracked to the Ph.D. program in Educational Psychology (specialization in Educational Technology), where I was a Government of Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) doctoral fellow.
Personally, I am a full-time single mother to two amazing girls, now 13 and 15, and two wonderful Havanese dogs. This journey of praxis, where theory is put into practice, was life-changing for me. I was able to learn in depth about educational psychology, educational technology, and what is learning vs. schooling, as I traversed the research literature, interacted with professionals, and parented children who went to traditional public school, traditional private school, were homeschooled, and or attended an inquiry-framework school.
My current interests span K-20 education, teacher education, open education, how technology scaffolds inquiry-based learning, educational reform, and multi-access learning, where modality is increasingly at the choice of the learner to create equality in access to education.
