Interactive and multimedia learning design should always serve the learning objectives, so it\u2019s important to know how an instructional designer would approach creating interactive and multimedia learning in support of a lesson or course. In this module, we take a look at some of the common instructional design and lesson planning principles and models that help us systematically plan learner-centred and effective learning experiences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this module we also look at the benefits of active learning and explore some of the ways that media and multimedia can support these activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of this module you will be able to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Describe six strategies for bringing active learning into a learning environment with media or multimedia&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Differentiate between active and passive learning&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Describe Merrill\u2019s Five Principles of Instruction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify examples of media and multimedia activities that can be used to support Merrill\u2019s principles in a learning environment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify four evidence-based learner outcomes from using active learning in the classroom&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Active Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci337\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php?action=h5p_embed&amp;id=12\" width=\"612\" height=\"739\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">Active learning involves learners in the process of constructing their own learning by encouraging them to apply their learning to different problems and contexts. &amp;amp;amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"><em>Image credit: Bryan Mathews<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Active Learning is a set of teaching strategies that engages students as active participants in their own learning, on their own or in collaboration with others. In the traditional, teacher-centred lecture format, students are passive observers, &#8216;consumers&#8217; of learning. Active learners are &#8216;producers&#8217; of learning. Active learning is also closely associated with learning design strategies, such as student-centred learning (from <a href=\"https:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/\">Universal Design for Learning<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research shows that this approach has many beneficial outcomes for learners including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improved critical thinking\/problem solving skills and increased content knowledge understanding in comparison to traditional lecture-based delivery (<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/bmb.2005.49403306387\/full\">Anderson et al, 2005<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater persistence. Students in courses <strong>without <\/strong>active learning were 1.5 times more likely to fail than students in a course that included active learning (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.1319030111\" target=\"_blank\">Freeman et al, 2014<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased enthusiasm for learning in both students and instructors (<a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/75b5\/14c55a497a8a737f9b31a5a8bfb6e1dfa17c.pdf\">Thaman et al., 2013<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of essential skills such as critical and creative thinking, adaptability, communication and interpersonal skills (<a href=\"http:\/\/ants.iis.sinica.edu.tw\/3bkmj9ltewxtsrrvnoknfdxrm3zfwrr\/16\/The%20influence%20of%20active%20learning%20experiences%20on%20the%20development%20of%20graduate%20capabilities.pdf\">Kember &amp; Leung, 2005<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Active vs. Passive Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So active learning improves learning outcomes and creates a better learning experience for both instructors and students. Why would you ever do anything else? While it&#8217;s critical to include active learning in our lesson plans, sometimes passive learning can be a useful tool for introducing new terminology or foundational knowledge. We&#8217;ve already established that storytelling is a powerful teaching strategy which doesn&#8217;t appear to inspire active learning but actually generates a lot of physical and mental responses. Watching a demonstration, reading an essay, listening to a story &#8211; these can provide valuable learning experiences that can be reinforced with active learning. Sometimes in our eagerness to add active learning to our teaching, we forget that there needs to be some scaffolding of knowledge and skill in order for students to be able to complete the activity successfully. It can also mean building in much more complex interactivity, such as branching scenarios and interactive case studies. However, complexity does not always equal better outcomes for learners. As always, we want to make sure that our multimedia tools and content serve the learning objectives. Sometimes the simplest approach with the fewest barriers provides the best outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some examples of the ways that multimedia can support active learning include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing platforms for expression and reflection (WordPress, <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ArcGIS  Storymaps<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social annotation of content (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hypothes.is<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ant.umn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">VideoAnt<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conceptual mapping (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canva<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/freemind.sourceforge.net\/wiki\/index.php\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\">Free Mind<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaborative writing and publishing (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pressbooks<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/scalar.me\/anvc\/scalar\/features\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scalar<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion and communication (Mattermost, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Discord<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slack<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Merrill&#8217;s Principles of Instruction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most useful learning theories from an active learning design perspective is Merrill\u2019s First Principles of Instruction. What authentic problem can we solve with this lesson that is meaningful to learners? He theorized that learning is promoted when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learners are engaged in solving <strong>real-world problems<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Existing knowledge is <strong>activated <\/strong>as a foundation for new knowledge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New knowledge is <strong>demonstrated <\/strong>to the learner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New knowledge is <strong>applied <\/strong>by the learner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New knowledge is <strong>integrated <\/strong>into the learner\u2019s world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do we facilitate this process with the use of media and multimedia? By helping to create an environment where this type of learning can take place. As Merrill himself pointed out in the video in Read\/Watch this week, just the use of media and multimedia doesn\u2019t promote learning. It\u2019s how you use them that counts.&nbsp;Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Activation and Demonstration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Videos can show real-world examples and demonstrate procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animations can demonstrate complex systems in ways that aren\u2019t visible to the human eye.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infographics can help learners activate past knowledge by giving them a quick reference to remind them of key terminology and information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Augmented reality can be overlaid on an environment to show hidden information in context<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Application:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interactive activities can supply quick formative feedback on learning concepts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Branched scenarios can be used to explore a complex case study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simulations can provide decision-making practice in a semblance of real-world scenarios<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course an interactive multimedia learning object like a branched scenario simulation could encompass all of these principles &#8211; it could simulate a real-world problem, activate prior learning, demonstrate and then allow the learner to practice and integrate the knowledge, skill or attitude. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read\/Watch<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/09\/study-shows-that-students-learn-more-when-taking-part-in-classrooms-that-employ-active-learning-strategies\/\">Lessons in Learning<\/a> (5 min) &#8211; <em>A summary of the landmark study from Harvard University about the impacts and challenges of Active Learning. <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofpedagogy.com\/do-something\/\" target=\"_blank\">To Learn Students Need to DO Something<\/a> (15 min) &#8211; <em>A reflection on the need for active learning in K-12 along with some suggestions for classroom activities<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n2EV8nLeBK4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Game-based Learning<\/a> (5 min) &#8211; <em>Using game-based learning to tell a story about the history of civilization using active learning.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.james-greenwood.com\/instructional-design\/toolkit\/merrill\/#:~:text=The%20premise%20of%20Merrill%E2%80%99s%20first%20principles%20of%20instruction,principles%20are%20necessary%20for%20effective%20and%20efficient%20instruction.%E2%80%9D%28p44%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merrill\u2019s First Principle of Instruction<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 (20 min) \u2013&nbsp;<em>A synthesis of Merrill\u2019s principles from an instructional design perspective<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/i_TKaO2-jXA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merrill on Instructional Design<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 (5 min)-&nbsp;<em>Merrill is one of the pioneers of modern instructional design thinking from a problem-centred perspective<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>He reflects here in particular on multimedia design and delivery.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcu.edu\/blog\/teaching-school-administration\/what-scaffolding-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What Is Scaffolding in Education? | GCU Blog<\/a> (10 min) &#8211; <em>What do we mean when we talk about scaffolding in education?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zoa2pKYp_fk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Active Learning Overview<\/a> (5 min) &#8211; <em>An overview of active learning and its importance in learning design.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RzbWSnb3kHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An Active Learning Example<\/a> (4 min) &#8211; <em>Active learning activity design in a physics lab.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ol3WabrXcR4\" target=\"_blank\">Active Learning in STEM<\/a> (5 min) &#8211; <em>Active learning at work in a STEM class.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As always, these questions are intended as an inspiration for your blogs, not a prescription.
