We learn so much from stories. In this module, we are going to look at stories from two different angles: The Science of storytelling &amp; the Process of storytelling. Before we do that, let&#8217;s take another look at why <em>Storytelling in the Classroom Matters<\/em>: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/storytelling-in-the-classroom-matters-matthew-friday\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/storytelling-in-the-classroom-matters-matthew-friday<\/a> (Friday, 2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Science of Storytelling:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-soundcloud alignright wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Science of Storytelling by Kevin - UVIC\" width=\"676\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F328747759&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=676\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Alexander (2017)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to Kevin Alexander&#8217;s introduction to storytelling podcast (to the right) and then read the following New York Times article which provides an accessible summary of the science that supports micro-narratives: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/18\/opinion\/sunday\/the-neuroscience-of-your-brain-on-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/18\/opinion\/sunday\/the-neuroscience-of-your-brain-on-fiction.html<\/a>&nbsp;(Paul, 2012)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This next article talks about why storytelling so effective in educational settings and should be one of your go-to tools in your pedagogical toolbox as a teacher: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/5965703\/the-science-of-storytelling-why-telling-a-story-is-the-most-powerful-way-to-activate-our-brains\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardbusiness.org\/what-makes-storytelling-so-effective-for-learning\/\">https:\/\/www.harvardbusiness.org\/what-makes-storytelling-so-effective-for-learning<\/a> (Biris, 2017)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">OPTIONAL: If you want to dive into the details behind the speaker-listener brain coupling science please read this journal article titled, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/107\/32\/14425.full\" target=\"_blank\">Speaker\u2013listener neural coupling underlies successful communication<\/a> (Stephens et al., 2017). <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Process of Storytelling:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many different frameworks for the storytelling process. The following video and articles will provide you with some useful, but overlapping suggestions for crafting memorable and engaging stories, and that can help you become a better storyteller in any medium you choose to tell stories to your learners. Some of the key suggestions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Know your audience<\/li><li>Tell a personal story<\/li><li>Show, don&#8217;t tell<\/li><li>Build up to a S.T.A.R. moment <br>(Something They&#8217;ll Always Remember)<\/li><li>End with a positive takeaway<\/li><li>Know stories<\/li><li>Choose the right medium<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Power of Storytellling in Teaching\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-FJD68y7LNo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Turner, 2016)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Different Types of Stories: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparkol.com\/en\/blog\/8-classic-storytelling-techniques-for-engaging-presentations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.sparkol.com\/en\/blog\/8-classic-storytelling-techniques-for-engaging-presentations<\/a> (n.d., 2020)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling Techniques: <a href=\"https:\/\/visme.co\/blog\/7-storytelling-techniques-used-by-the-most-inspiring-ted-presenters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/visme.co\/blog\/7-storytelling-techniques-used-by-the-most-inspiring-ted-presenters<\/a> (Chibana, 2015)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, please remember to refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1TGVFG_iCc3iSz3aX3j8UC-YC63V__6tKFJQ4FtAsH4o\/edit#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Principles of Multimedia Learning<\/a> (Mayer, 2014) when you tell stories using more than one medium so that your stories can be as impactful and as memorable as possible for your learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lab (asynchronous)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create an Impactful Personal Story with Twine<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Because almost all of you have already been introduced to Twine, a free software tool for creating interactive and nonlinear stories, in EDCI 336, we won&#8217;t come together in Zoom for an introduction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In place of a synchronous lab, I would like you to use the suggestions and principles you&#8217;ve learned about storytelling to tell a personal story using Twine. Please integrate multimedia elements into your story and follow the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1TGVFG_iCc3iSz3aX3j8UC-YC63V__6tKFJQ4FtAsH4o\/edit#\" target=\"_blank\">Principles of Multimedia Learning<\/a> as you weave them into your story. So please do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Refresh your Twine skills by browsing through this Twine tutorial: <\/li><li>Think of an age-appropriate memorable story that you would like to tell, that could teach an important life lesson to learners in one of your future classes (possibly in an online practicum?).<\/li><li>Think about what multimedia elements you could include in your story: photos, background audio, videos, etc.<\/li><li>Use Twine to create either a choose your own adventure story with multiple branches, or a more linear story.<\/li><li>OPTIONAL: If you would like to make your story publically available you can either post your story to your personal UVic webspace (instructions on how to do this are at the end of the Twine activities) or email your story to rmccue@uvic.ca if you would like him to put it on a web server so that you can link to it from your blog.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Play a Serious Game with a Storyline<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Fake News is a media literacy multimedia game with a storyline where the player (aka a learner) tries to get as many social media followers as possible by spreading fake news.
