In this blog, I will be sharing some general TTOCing advice and information!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cjbasanta.opened.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9944\/2026\/03\/11a72a9c-0334-4d39-a139-c2fd4ac3af15-683x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-268\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image created by ChatGPT 5.4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As TTOCs are often called into action on short notice regarding where they will teach, what they will be teaching, and whom they will be teaching, it is important to be as prepared as one can be, so here is a list of preparation advice!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before the bell:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the first bell or time you are to begin teaching\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Let the school know if you will be late due to your assignment notification arriving late.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Check in at the office for information and keys<\/li>\n<li>Get familiar with the building and introduce yourself to staff you run into\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If there is time, find the medical room, staff room, gym, and fire exits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Locate the teacher\u2019s daybook and review the day\u2019s lesson plans <\/li>\n<li>Confirm the attendance procedure, seating plan (if there is one), and resources\/materials needed for the day<\/li>\n<li>Find the teacher supply room and supervision schedule <\/li>\n<li>Write your name on the board along with a greeting if you wish<\/li>\n<li>Ask about attending meetings<\/li>\n<li>Ask about medical concerns and plans, safety plans, custody orders, or anything else relevant to student and staff health and safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When the students arrive:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Welcome them as they enter the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Introduce yourself to the class, and explain that you are there as their regular teacher for the day, and that their regular teacher has left plans for what we will being doing today\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Follow the lesson plans as closely as you can<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t expect to cover everything the teacher left. Quality over quantity.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your pace will be different, and students\u2019 responses to your teaching will be different too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Try to keep the seating plan intact.<\/li>\n<li>Collect any important information such as notes of absence, field trip forms, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Cover a brief list of classroom rules and expectations as well as enforceable consequences for inappropriate classroom behaviour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reporting to the contract teacher<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leave a dated paper listing who is late or absent<\/li>\n<li>Make note of any deviations or variations to the regular day plan.<\/li>\n<li>Indicate in the daybook what work has been completed.<\/li>\n<li>Mark written work, especially if it is objective.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you feel some marking can\u2019t be done because of its complexity or subjectivity, leave it for the teacher with a note.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Include any specific concerns or interests.<\/li>\n<li>Share who was cooperative or un-cooperative. Give praise where it\u2019s due.<\/li>\n<li>Wherever it is possible, prepare a daybook for the next day\u2019s work, unless the teacher has said they do not need or want you to.<\/li>\n<li>Leave comments and suggestions for following up on the day\u2019s work and feedback for the teacher on class\/individual progress.<\/li>\n<li>Leave your phone number or email so that the teacher can reach you.<\/li>\n<li>Keep a copy for yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Working as a TTOC is usually the first step new teachers take after finishing their final practicum and getting certified.
