Today I sewed the band into all four panels and finished the side seams. There’s something so satisfying about seeing a pile of fabric finally become a finished product.

Sewing my final seam.

Once the sewing was done, the moment of truth came: washing them. I was honestly a little nervous putting them into the washing machine after all the work that had gone into them, but thankfully, they survived without any problems. After washing, I ironed each panel and then set up the curtain rod so I could finally hang them.

My helper in setting up the curtain rod.

Seeing them up in the room was exciting. The curtains actually make the room look much taller, which was one of the goals I had when starting this project. I also really like the fabric. Another success is that the seam in the two large panels is hardly noticeable, which I was worried about when I first had to piece the fabric together.

However, not everything turned out perfectly. I didn’t include enough structure at the top of the curtains, and I accidentally sewed the band too high. Because of this, you can see the curtain track, which wasn’t the look I was going for. Also, the curtain rod I bought didn’t have nearly enough gliders, so only about half of my hooks are attached. Luckily, I can buy them in bulk, so I will be doing that soon. I think the top is fixable if I decide to go back and adjust it later. For now, though, they are finished and functional, which still feels like a win.

This whole project was a reminder that sometimes, done is better than perfect. Sure, the curtains aren’t flawless, but finishing them felt like a big, cozy exhale. Plus, I levelled up my sewing confidence and got a crash course in how fabric behaves when you actually put it to use— it’s rarely as cooperative as you hope.

Here is the final product:

After days (and days!) of measuring, cutting, pinning, and just a little bit of cursing, I finally thought I’d reached the finish line with my curtain project.
