It was interesting to learn about how certain aspects of a website, such as contrast and colour, as well as more behind the scenes elements, like image descriptions and alt text for audio readers, can significantly impact accessibility.

These are often things we take for granted and rarely consider when creating resources for learners. When reviewing my own website, it saw that my choice of colours and images could make it difficult for some viewers to access the content. This connects directly to the materials we create for students in the classroom. It highlights the importance of truly knowing our learners, understanding what works best for them, and designing content that allows all students to thrive.

We also had a very interesting conversation in our breakout room about how technology in classrooms has changed since we were students. From my own experience, students with disabilities were often places in separate classrooms when I was in school. Because of this, there were likely technologies being used to support those learners that many of us never say. Reflecting on my Link2Practice last semester, I noticed how much for integrated technology has become. For example, Chromebooks were used for audiobooks and ways to support students with reading and writing. These technologies helped learners feel more confident and productive. It does make me sad that not all schools have equal access to funding or resources for these supports, but I hope that this will continue to change and improve. It is important as educators to keep learning about ways to support students, even when resources are limited.

As seen above, the below “Inclusion without support is abandonment” was shared in our breakout room and it stayed with me. After class, I spent some time reflecting on what this truly means. Can we really call something inclusion if students are not given the support they need to succeed? How do teachers navigate a system that often lacks funding and resources? I don’t think there are clear answers to these questions, since they reflect larger systemic issues. However, they are important questions to keep in mind. We must advocate for our students and a system that better supports them in any way that we can.

This quote does not seem to have a specific origin or author to cite.

When considering what images to use to represent my learning this class, I initially felt quite confused. We discussed copyright and the importance of proper citation, which made me more aware of how images are sourced and used. Because of this, I decided to paint the quote that stood out to me during our class discussion. Creating an image myself felt more intentional and meaningful than generating one with AI or browsing the internet for something to use. This allowed me to engage more personally with my learning from this class. Also, I am still not sure what colours to use so that it feels more accessible! I chose reds and orange for my art…

I found that today’s class encouraged a great deal of reflection on how we can make online platforms more inclusive and how to critically analyze the websites we use in our daily lives.
