After practicing and gathering advice from more experienced sewers, I finally sat down to sew the curtains. I had been given some helpful tips about keeping seams straight, and going into this part, I felt like I had a better sense of what to do.

I started with the two smaller curtain panels, and thankfully, they went smoothly. Those first pieces gave me some confidence before moving on to the longer seams. My first long seam ended up slightly off, but honestly, it was better than I expected. By the time I sewed the second, third, and fourth seams, things were already looking much better.

Through the process, I realized that straight seams are really about the preparation beforehand. Careful pinning makes a huge difference, but so does simply slowing down while sewing so I can make small adjustments as I go. It’s tempting to rush, but taking the extra time makes the results noticeably better.

By the end of the session, I had completed the top and bottom hems on both of the small curtains and sewn two pieces of one of the larger panels together. Something that surprised me was how much time goes into the steps before the sewing even starts. Pinning and measuring the fabric actually takes longer than sewing the seam itself.

I’m really happy to see the curtains starting to come together.

I’ve started to wonder how the fabric will hang once everything is finished. After doing a bit more research, I decided to order a curtain header band to give the top of the curtains more structure. Once it arrives, I’ll sew it into place and hopefully that will help the fabric hang the way I’m imagining.

This project has been a good reminder that sewing, like many skills, is as much about patience and preparation as it is about the actual stitching. I’m looking forward to seeing these curtains finished!

Sewing Day: Putting My Learning to the Test Today felt like the real test of everything I’ve been learning.
