This will be useful for filling in some of the more obvious senses before we look towards more complex systems of navigation. I may want to consider having this as the first lesson, since it should be the most simple out of the unit.

The aspects of this lesson will be to be aware of our senses as we navigate the world. This will be a focus on what we know already and what we expect as we move along our pathways. This lesson will be important because sometimes we just need a simple solution in order to get us back on our track when we get slightly lost anywhere.

This will begin with a discussion about the question of, How do we know where we are going? What are some things we notice as we go places that indicate we are on the right path? How do our senses tell us where we are?

For example, for smell, I know in Vancouver that i’m crossing the Knight St. bridge because there is a dog food factory nearby there and it always smells of dog food as we drive across.

An example for hearing could be: I know i’m getting nearer to the music festival because I can hear the music – so I start walking in that direction.

A fun activity for feeling will be for students to pick a partner and have to move around with their eyes closed. This could be in the class or outside on the playground (somewhere with some obstacles). Students with their eyes closed will need to move around slowly to not trip or run into anything. Their partner will have to let them know if they need to be aware of anything that could cause a mis-step and prevent them from running into an obstacle.

For sight, this would be a discussion about visual markers. For example, I know I am looking south (roughly) when I see Mt. Baker off in the distance and I’m in Victoria.

There will be a writing activity where students will need to write instructions of how to get from one point into the classroom to another point in the classroom (~20mins). They will need to provide ten details in order to guide their partner along this path. Option to make it required that they include all the senses. The teacher will need to write some direction examples on the whiteboard for example – Start at the entrance of the classroom, walk ten steps forward, stop at the pencil sharpener, turn and walk left past the book bin, you have arrived at your destination, etc.

Depending on the grade level, this activity could be simplified or more complex (outside, in the halls, etc.).

One element to keep in mind during this lesson would be when observational markers change we have to make a rational choice based on what information is available. A discussion question could be, What do we do when our regular path doesn’t look the same? When we are used to passing a sculpture on the way to school that isn’t there anymore, how do we know we are still on the same path?

Here is an image about situational awareness:

This could be useful to keep in mind when we are navigating our usual routes, or new ones.

For this lesson, I will be focusing on observational awareness.
