In terms of choice using Generative AI, I think that its usage can be avoided to some extent, but it depends what technology you use, where you live, cultural differences, career etc. For most, I suppose its a question of, how can we regulate GenAI and use it in moderation. As upcoming teachers, we are almost certain to teach aspects of AI to students. Even for anyone as we use Google it gives us an AI response first (which can be turned off), but somewhere along the line, Google itself uses AI to function. Many companies seem to use AI somewhere one way or another. For communities that don’t have access to technology like computers, they are naturally not using AI. But depending on the technology they do have, maybe AI was used as a tool during the process to create said technology. On another note, I recently shared with my education cohort that I bought a Typewriter. I bought it out of nostalgia and to write in a different way for creative and artistic purposes. Here is a photo of it! I believe it dates back to the 1950’s or 60’s.

3. + 4. For environmental impact mitigation, I think that regulation and moderation needs to be enforced for AI usage and data centres. I don’t think everyone should have full access to AI without limitations. I think there is too much AI slop and fake things going around, rather than using it for more important purposes. I wonder when the Ai boom will slow down… But for now, I think that since AI, chat, image/video generation, is free for everyone, then humans are the product. There seems to be a lot of political motives for funding Ai as well and I think that it’s hard to tell what direction regulation will go.

We as a group also spoke about the tech giant question and concluded that they have no real motive for managing power and water consumption because they are all driven for money. If they do try to manage power and water consumption, it will be in order to make money, rather than be more efficient or environmentally friendly for the world.

This is the first video I saw awhile back when I first heard about the environmental impacts of Ai Data Centres and what direction they are headed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGjj7wDYaiI

I think that for the time being, this kind of problem will only worsen and that more small communities will be affected by the impacts. Eventually, the small problems will lead to bigger problems to a wider community.

In this reflection, I will write about some ideas regarding Generative AI Power and Water Use.
