She ran us through a whole bunch of the online resource pathways. KnowBC was super useful, as it provides local information that helps students connect with the land and aids in planning lessons, creating field guides, making trivia, doing research projects, and incorporating elements of history as well. This resource would be more teacher-led than student-led, as it provides more information than activities. We then explored ProQuest and its features, having digitized newspapers such as the first Victoria newspaper, which students could explore. World Book Early Learning was explored next, and I have already spent some time with this resource; it is one of my favourites because it is so interactive. World Book Kids is still colourful and includes a search bar that guides students and encourages them to explore their interests. Compare Places is a great aspect of this website that allows students to explore different aspects of geography and different countries around the world. I really like that, in general, the World Book Series progresses in age focus and appeals to each learning range. It is very useful for students, as it includes many images that students who cannot search using keywords can use. Having each of these resources being able to translate into any language, not only the words but the read-aloud support too, is essential for multilingual learners. Overall, this session was very helpful for further exploring the Focused ED online portal and getting familiar with the resources that can be very helpful not only for teachers but also for students. The photos below will help visualize this resource better.

My second Focused Ed session was on Live IT Earth with Blue Netherclift. This platform includes many topics to explore, and within each topic, there is a 20-minute feature show to kick off the learning journey. The first one we focused on was the St Lawrence Estuary Ocean. The video was super engaging and included both French and English voice-overs, as well as various subtitle languages. I really like that the website is student-focused, but still allows teachers to use it, just not as the first feature you see. I also love how applicable this is to classroom learning, with slides and a checklist you can follow along to, and then watch the film when it is intended. The pre-made slides are so detailed and accessible to learners because they include narrated features. I also love that it can be adapted to any class by copying the slides and tailoring them for the grade level. This website also has curricular connections, which is awesome for seeing exactly which curricular competencies you are hitting as you move through this resource. The community pathway includes additional Indigenous-focused learning and is filmed in the community with Indigenous people. I love that it has career pathways and so many options for students and teachers to explore, including self-assessments to finish a topic or wrap it up, with “I can” statements. I am excited to further explore this program, as it offers many useful resources that can be used in the classroom in whichever format works best for the students.
