[document uploaded from Brightspace here that i’m leaving out to save blog room”]

Result: How has learning about prompts changed the way I think about communicating with AI tools, and why is clarity so important when trying to get useful responses?

I think that the more that I type in AI chat prompts, the more that I become aware what they are and aren’t capable of doing. There seems to be some words and things that the chats are more responsive in order to alter the result, while sometimes adding certain information can be confusing. Some basic formatting words seem to be useful, like asking for lists, a paragraph, simplification, style choices etc. whereas sometimes certain information can be typed in afterwards without consulting the Ai (to get the exact result you are meaning).

Once i tried to use Ai for a sports day at the school where I was working. I asked the chat to create a list of teams that alternate between stations and specified that the teams play a different station each period and do not play the same team twice. Unfortunately, the chat was unable to follow these instructions, even after trying to clarify afterwards. It kept duplicating teams, and leaving information out. There were about 10 teams, 7 stations, and 7 periods of sports throughout the day, with snack and lunch break included. It became frustrating and complicated while using the Ai to figure it out- since it would make a new, weird mistake every time.

I ended up creating a paper model that rotated, which was easier for me to organize accurately without the mistakes. It seems that there are certain concepts that Ai can’t grasp accurately.

I don’t have a picture any more of the wheel that I made by hand, but here is one I found online to get a rough idea. Imagine this wheel with the sequence of sport teams in each category, then a bigger wheel behind it with the same team names in each category. I rotated the front wheel to the left and the back wheel to the right to figure out which team would alternate with which team.

All that to say, sometimes it helps to create models or maquettes by hand instead of Ai, in order to get a more precise result. I felt much more at peace once I finally figured out this mathematical/visual/organizational problem.

For this weekly reflection, I’ve asked Microsoft Co-pilot to create a prompt for me to answer.
