I found this interesting infographic from The Wall Street Journal.

Do we have a choice about using gen AI and consuming gen AI media?

I think people do have a choice about intentionally using generative AI. However, generative AI is commonly hidden in so many different websites (such as google, canva, adobe, amazon, and so many more), as well as applications (instagram, TikTok, facebook, pinterest). Essentially, people have choice in regards to how we use and engage with generative AI, but not in regards to its development and growth as a tech tool in society.

However, I believe that we cannot avoid consuming generative AI related content especially when it comes to content creation apps, such as Tiktok, Instagram, Canva, Spotify, and more. A key example I will always remember is a the viral TikTok video by @rachelthecatlovers about the bunnies jumping on the trampoline. The creator received a whopping 243.8 million views, for AI generated content. Although now it explicitly states that it “Contains AI-generated media” when I originally saw the video, like many of the other millions of viewers, I originally believed it to be true.

@rachelthecatlovers

Just checked the home security cam and… I think we’ve got guest performers out back! @Ring #bunny #ringdoorbell #ring #bunnies #trampoline

♬ Bounce When She Walk – Ohboyprince

Can we avoid using generative AI?

As a person, if you do not want to use generative AI, you have to actively avoid it (like the plague). Therefore, technically we can avoid using however, generative AI may play a crucial role in certain individuals educational or occupational lives. I think an effective way to avoid generative AI would be to place greater pressures on tech giants/companies to make AI use more transparent for its users and an option when using certain websites, search engines or platforms. One search engine I discovered at the end of 2025 was DuckDuckGo! It is a search engine that treats AI features as options, rather than core components.

Click on the logo to explore DuckDuckGo!

Does whether we use generative AI or not really make a difference?

I believe that choosing not to use generative AI can make personal differences. For example avoiding generative AI use may personally support better mental well-being, and sharper cognitive and critical thinking skills. It could also benefit the environment however this might require a small community of people to see change in your lifetime.

This week we also discussed the environmental impacts and if they can be mitigated, and wondering if tech giants can solve the power and water overconsumption, I think the Tiktok below does an adequate job of explaining the impact tech companies have on generative AI services.

@no_the_robot

I’m not pro-AI, I’m anti-greedy humans.
