There are certain guidelines that UDL follows: engagement, representation, and action & expression (click if you want to learn more!). I believe that these guidelines can be supported through generative AI, which can be useful to help support lesson planning because I believe that by using a UDL template like the one Randy shared with us this week during class time to help with critiquing and reviewing our AI lesson plan, activity, and assessment. I think that generative AI can be useful to open up teachers’ lessons and offer various perspectives to scaffold and support students by offering multiple ways to learn new information.

We also discussed understanding by design (UbD). I found this website page and storyboard by Rebecca Ray. Below, you can find an image of the storyboard explaining Stage 1: Desired results of the understanding by design framework that we discussed in class. I find the visual representations on the website useful to further comprehend the framework, it gives concrete examples of what establishing goals, constructing understanding, asking essential questions, etc. entails. I think that AI could be beneficial to support implementing the UbD framework because it can maybe break down a teacher’s ideas and then show them how it can be pieced together to follow the UbD guidelines/template.

Click on the image to view more storyboards

Example from the week

For example, in our EDCI 336 course, the professor, Randy Labonte, had us students critique a lesson plan, activity, and assessment tool using one generative AI (I chose Claude AI). Then this week we were asked to critique the product our chosen generative AI gave us. Next, we had to input the UbD and UDL templates provided and our original lesson plan into a new generative AI (I chose Google Gemini). I asked Gemini to recreate the activity (worksheet) that Claude had created to offer multiple means of learning and to offer more opportunities for students to scaffold rather than tell information to students using a worksheet.

Overall, I learned from this experience that by providing generative AI with stricter guidelines, like sharing the UbD and UDL information, being more direct with what I want it to produce, and using multiple generative AI platforms, I can have a final product of a lesson plan, activity, and assessment that I could consider using in a classroom environment. I was initially skeptical about using more than one generative AI platform, but it proved to be beneficial, and the final product was something more practical for a classroom assignment.

If you would like to check out my conversation with Google Gemini 3 – Thinking mode, you can click the button below.

Google Gemini Conversation

How can AI support UDL and UbD when Lesson Planning UDL is a framework made by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) that is an essential part of lesson planning as its value is placed on learner agency and… Continue Reading →

[1

post-5678","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
