It allowed me to quickly complete an assignment that appeared to be many parts, opening the door to potentially saving time on lesson planning and resource creations that could be spent bonding with students, collaborating with fellow educators, or taking time for the work-life balance.

Limitations

When using Gen AI, I find that it takes away the critical thinking and problem solving aspect. One of my favourite parts of potentially being a teacher is being able to solve problems all day and come up with clever ways to get around obstacles and inconveniences. Using AI to problem solve takes away that critical thinking piece in my opinion. When I have used AI in the past to assist with planning, it has always felt as though it is not truly authentically my plan anymore. I find that it helps in generating ideas if I am stuck, but I enjoy being able to rely on my own critical thinking.

Another limitation is that you have to be precise and clear in your prompt in order to get the output you are wanting. When I was testing out Magicschool.ai, I gave it some prompts that I was unclear on and it either asked me clarifying questions or did not give me an output. I think this is a situation where I have not used AI enough to know how to ask it to do exactly what I want and is probably a skill I need to work on.

School Uses

Gen AI could be very helpful in creating unit and lesson plans for the class rooms. I especially enjoyed asking magicschool.ai to create a reading list and plan interactive read alouds or lessons that could go alone with those books. This information could then be used to create a unit covering a theme. It saved me a lot of time and gave me some great groundwork to start with that I could then build off of and add my own twist.

Magicschool.ai home page with the various features it has for teachers.

I have not explored AI much in the educational setting (as I am not yet a teacher) but I was intrigued by all of the different categories there were on an AI catered to teachers and education. Having a section to create report card comments or to generate a worksheet would be super helpful. One of my goals as a teacher is to be ahead in my lesson planning incase I get sick or have to call in a sub, everything is there and organized already. I think using AI would help me do this in a timely way that is not too overwhelming.

Upon doing the AI Workbook, I learned how to use AI in a more direct way to help enhance my lesson plans, create assessments, and create resources.
