When we were researching, the anticipated Gemini answer appeared in impossible-to-miss large font before all other information. As expected, the student I was working with was eager to copy and paste that content into their slide deck and finish the assignment as fast as possible. They were not thrilled when I told them we had to go find a website that had the information we were looking for to, at the minimum, reiterate what the Gemini had supplied. I explained the importance of fact checking the information found online through finding multiple sources that have similar information. Because our society is evolving to a place where it is almost impossible to not interact with AI, the education behind using it needs to be intentional and direct.

At this point in my career, I hope to teach middle school or upper elementary grades where students will inevitably be tasked with independently researching on the internet. To help facilitate growth and applicable learning for this grade level, I plan to teach how to use AI as a tool to assist with research. I think documenting the boundary of what is acceptable use of AI and what is not acceptable will be helpful for students and keep them accountable. I anticipate creating the list to be an evolving experience, but as of today, this is what I have so far:

A guide to using GenAI in Ms. Fefchak’s class:

AI can be used:

To assist in organization of ideas

To provide options for information sourcing (recommending podcasts, videos, books, etc)

To clarify complex ideas

AI cannot be used for:

Writing paragraphs

Directly copying information

Making connections between information

I believe education on the use of AI should go hand-in-hand with the effects of AI. So, I plan to inform students on the consequences AI has on culture, the environment, and personal development. This could include conversations around the rights artists have over their work and how AI art may or may not infringe these rights.

Also identifying the energy AI uses to be operational and where that energy comes from and how it is disproportional to its purpose.

As far as acknowledging AI’s effects on personal development, I hold a lot of value in collaboration, critical thinking, and analysis, and hope to highlight those attributes in my teaching so learners may see the value in them. AI can cut a lot of critical thinking and analysis corners, so I think it would be beneficial to be explicit about the class expectations when it comes to AI by adding it to the class contract we collaboratively develop at the beginning of the year. This can hold everyone accountable and allow for conversation of why this is important.

Overall, I believe education is a positive thing. Learning about the new movements and accomplishments in society is essential to being an informed, active member of our community. I hope that my educational journey is a long one, and that we all have the mindset of students wanting to learn more.

During my Link 2 Practice experience last semester, I was working with a grade 8 student to help create a PowerPoint presentation explaining the history and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
