These are copyrighted and public domain works at each extreme, but <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_Lessig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Lessig<\/a> and colleagues founded <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creative Commons licensing<\/a> to allow people to retain copyright, while making customized choices about how their work can be shared and used. It has been transformative in post-secondary, but unfortunately, there isn\u2019t enough awareness or advocacy in education, which means most of society isn&#8217;t aware. This is changing, however, as government is putting more requirements around licensing of publicly funded work. Larry Lessig received an honourary doctorate of Education here at UVic. You can see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/svQ6ZeWUKXM?si=yKFCSsx-abYhvJd1&amp;t=4024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recording of Dr. Lessig&#8217;s introduction and speech during the 2022 UVic Convocation<\/a>. We have an option for individuals or corporate donors to support this work towards open at UVic by <a href=\"https:\/\/extrweb.uvic.ca\/donate\/open-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donating to the UVic Open Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creative Commons website<\/a> &#8211; Please visit to learn more about licensing and how to license your own work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/search.creativecommons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Search function<\/a> on the CC Website to help find CC-licensed material \u2013 choose images for your website to add as featured images for posts, for example, or for your header image, but make sure they are not copyrighted. Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/imghp?hl=en&amp;tab=wi&amp;authuser=0&amp;ogbl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reverse image search<\/a> will make it easy for copyright holders to find where their works are used on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.creativecommons.org\/wiki\/best_practices_for_attribution#Examples_of_attribution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Attribute CC materials<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fair Dealing (Canada) or Fair Use (USA) is not Creative Commons but exceptions for use of copyrighted material.
