Simply, using both words and pictures is more effective than providing words alone. Educators can adapt and use multimedia to enhance learning in a multitude of ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2006-00633-003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayer, (2005)<\/a> devised Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning stating &#8220;multimedia instructional messages that are designed in light of how the human mind works are more likely to lead to meaningful learning than those that are not&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h5>Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer)<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>There are two separate channels (audio and visual) for processing information (sometimes referred to as Dual-Coding Theory);<\/li>\n<li>Each channel has a limted (finite) capacity (Cognitive Load);<\/li>\n<li>Learning is an actice process of filtering, selecting, organizing, and integrating information based upon prior knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a classic way, Meyer (2009) produces the example of explaining a bicycle pump. One using text only with the second incorporating multimedia. The point being literally illustrated below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explaining a bicycle pump \u2013 text alone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the handle is pulled up the piston moves up, the inlet valve opens, the outlet valve closes, and the air enters the cylinder. Classroom lessons, workshops, or your online content can benefit from multimedia.\u00a0 UVic students are granted access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/systems\/services\/computerssoftware\/microsoft365\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft <\/a>and may use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/systems\/services\/computerssoftware\/adobe-campus-license\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adobe software<\/a> in select computing facilities at UVic. More information can be found by contacting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/systems\/services\/contact\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helpdesk<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlineservices.uvic.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">onlineservices.uvic.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As you will create diverse content there may be specialized programs you will utilize. Depending on what content you want to create there are different types of programs which potentially may be more suitable to your task. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raster_graphics_editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raster graphic<\/a> editors are programs that allows you to create and edit images and save them in one of many such as <a title=\"JPEG\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/JPEG\">JPEG<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Portable Network Graphics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portable_Network_Graphics\">PNG<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"GIF\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GIF\">GIF<\/a>and may be are more suitable for retouching, photo processing, photorealistic illustrations, collage, and illustrations drawn by hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vector_graphics_editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vector graphics<\/a> editor software are often used for typography, logos, sharp-edged artistic illustrations, cartoons, clip art, complex geometric patterns, technical illustrations, diagramming and flowcharting. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comparison_of_vector_graphics_editors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comparison of vector graphics editors<\/a>. Currently <a href=\"https:\/\/inkscape.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/inkscape.org\/<\/a> is free and popular.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some popular tools you can create with.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/get-microsoft-paint-a6b9578c-ed1c-5b09-0699-4ed8115f9aa9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Paint<\/a> &#8211; native to Windows photo editing program for basic multimedia that is widely available and still used<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/powerpoint-for-windows-training-40e8c930-cb0b-40d8-82c4-bd53d3398787?wt.mc_id=otc_home&amp;ui=en-US&amp;rs=en-CA&amp;ad=CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft PowerPoint<\/a>\u00a0 &#8211; presentation software used extensively in K-12 to accompany classroom teaching has editing capabilities<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/ca\/creativecloud.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adobe Creative Cloud<\/a> &#8211; professional standard collection of 20+ services for photography, design, video, web, and where you can find Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere and the pdf classic Acrobat.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/websites\/content\/photos\/cropping\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(UVic tutorial)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Go further &#8211; try experimenting with some advanced web based freely available graphic creation tools online (<a href=\"https:\/\/pixlr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pixlr.com<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/vectr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vectr.com<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">canva.com<\/a> to start)<\/li>\n<li>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comparison_of_raster_graphics_editors#List\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> for an exhaustive list<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Screensots<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2263 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci136\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2021\/02\/Mac-key-board.png\" alt=\"Keyboard for Mac\" width=\"619\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci136\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2021\/02\/Mac-key-board.png 972w, https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci136\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2021\/02\/Mac-key-board-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci136\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2021\/02\/Mac-key-board-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci136\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2021\/02\/Mac-key-board-600x315.png 600w, https:\/\/edtechuvic.ca\/edci136\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2021\/02\/Mac-key-board-945x496.png 945w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Capturing whatever is on your screen is another way to create content. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/copy-the-window-or-screen-contents-98c41969-51e5-45e1-be36-fb9381b32bb7?ui=en-us&amp;rs=en-us&amp;ad=us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Screenshots<\/a> or screen grabs can be taken by pressing the &#8216;control&#8217; and &#8216;print screen&#8217; keys on windows computers. To edit, paste into a program like MS Paint. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/how-to\/7-ways-you-can-take-screenshots-in-windows-10\/#:~:text=To%20capture%20your%20entire%20screen%20and%20automatically%20save%20the%20screenshot,to%20the%20Pictures%20%3E%20Screenshots%20folder.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This site<\/a> lists 6 other ways.<\/p>\n<p>To take a screenshot on a Mac: Press command, shift, 4, allows you to drag your mouse and select what you want to screenshot and command, shift, 3 take a screenshot of the entire screen<\/p>\n<p>To take a screenshot on an iOS phone &#8211; Hold volume up and side button<\/p>\n<p>To take a screenshot on an Android phone &#8211; Hold volume down and power button<\/p>\n<h4>Finding graphics<\/h4>\n<p>Simple changes can help you customize your content to fit the exact content you need for your lesson or other needs. Finding graphics you are able to edit and remix on sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/search.creativecommons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creativecommons.org<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unsplash.com <\/a>gives you a headstart and means you may not have to start from scratch. To save graphics or slides as picture files.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>right click image<\/li>\n<li>select <strong>save as picture<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>select PNG or JPG<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Image file size<\/h4>\n<p>When working with graphics, you should be conscious of the size of the files you are working with.
